Is Philosophy a Science

One of the questions in the book Philosophy of Education Questions and Answers Volume 1 was about the relationship between Philosophy and Science. Is Philosophy a Science?

This has been a discussion for quite some time with some Philosophers stating that Philosophy is actually a science and some disagree to the fact.

The author of above mentioned book, Prof. Simeon Ogbulafor emphasizes that Science needs Philosophy and Philosophy needs Science. Science and Philosophy deals with speculative science that arrives at knowledge that does not require verification.

He also quoted this important statement

One cannot completely separate Science from Philosophy since the two disciplines deals with facts. Facts contributes to Value which is used by mankind to make decisions.

Is Philosophy a Science? Aristotle was an authority of natural philosophy – he related philosophy to nature. He also taught all natural sciences including Physics and Biology as well. Since he was a well rounded scholar, he could relate Philosophy to any subject he taught. Wikipedia states that Aristotle’s philosophical endeavors encompassed virtually all facets of intellectual inquiry.

However modern scholars have but limits to the boundaries of philosophy as it relates to science.

In modern times, the scope of philosophy has become limited to more generic or abstract inquiries, such as ethics and metaphysics, in which logic plays a major role. Today’s philosophy tends to exclude empirical study of the natural world by means of the scientific method.

However most Philosophers explain that Philosophy can be applied to topics where natural sciences like Physics, Mathematics and Biology cannot fathom.

In summarizing, Philosophy and Science has one common theme, “knowledge”. Whether knowledge is acquired using the inductive or the deductive method both methodologies are used today to resolve scientific hypothesis and facts. As a result, it will not be possible to completely separate Philosophy from Science.

Is Philosophy a Science? This will be a debate for a long time.
